Rare Chicago Blues
Chicago 1962-1968

Release Date: 1993 (May 1, 1993)
Label: Bullseye Blues (9530)
Running Time: 63:20

James Cotton tracks:
10 So Glad You're Mine 3:05

James Cotton (vo, hca)
Paul Butterfield (hca)
Billy Boy Arnold (hca)
Elvin Bishop (g)

Recorded between 1962 and 1968 by Norman Dayron, Rare Chicago Blues is an enthralling collection of rare blues from artists like Otis Spann, Little Brother Montgomery, Big Joe Williams, Robert Pete Williams, as well as several others. Captured live in clubs and on the street, these tracks give a good taste of what real, gritty urban blues sounded like in the '60s and is worthwhile for true blues afficionados.

3 Harp Boogie

Recording: recorded originally in 1963 & 1967
Release Date: 1994
Label: RHINO/TOMATO CD 71662
Running Time: 27:16

The music featured here is actually all right, but the set suffers due to its odd patchwork assembly. Five of the tracks come from a 1963 acoustic session recorded at an apartment on the South Side, featuring Elvin Bishop on guitar, Cotton on vocals and harmonica, Paul Butterfield on harmonica, and Billy Boy Arnold on harmonica (hence the title 3 Harp Boogie). The other four selections are taken from his 1967 Verve album James Cotton Blues Band, available in its entirety on the Best of the Verve Years compilation. That means you probably only want this for the rarer acoustic cuts, which are good, but a short value for a CD purchase unless you're a very big Cotton fan. Again, though, there's nothing wrong with the music itself. Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Feelin' Down on the South Side culls the best of the albums that were cut in Chicago with top flight selections by Billy Boy Arnold, Homesick James, Otis Spann and James Cotton. Cotton's "One More Mile To Go" with its voodoo backup chorus from the Muddy Waters band is downright bone chilling and eerie. ~ Cub Koda

Recorded live at The New Penelope Café, Montreal, Canada on September 28, 1967. James formed the James Cotton Blues Band in 1967. They mainly performed their own arrangements of popular blues and R&B material from the 1950s and 1960s. Two albums were recorded live in Montreal that year. It was their last set of the nite and James new band was not quite a month old.Francis Clay had just replaced the ailing Sam Lay but they did not miss a beat. This was back when James was in his prime, his voice and harp playing were well seasoned but still clear and strong. (Just A Memory Records 5455 rue Par'e, Suite 001, Montreal (Quebec) Canada H4P 1P7)

Collector's Classics: It Was a Very Good Year
Release Date: 2001( 02/13/01) (Canada)
Label: JUSTIN TIME/JUST A MEMORY JAM 9144-2

James Cotton's It Was a Very Good Year is a tribute CD that has been restored from its "live" performance in Montreal's the New Penelope Cafe in the late '60s (believed to be the first year of the band's existence - 1967). The benefit of today's technology has assisted in capturing the chomaticism inherent in the harmonica playing of James Cotton, excitement of Albert Gianquito's piano (you may remember him from his stints with Santana), Bobby Anderson on bass, Francis Clay on drums, and Luther Tucker on guitar. This blues band features a broad selection of tunes that range from the opener, "It Was a Very Good Year," in a sultry Latinized version to "The Midnight Creeper," a number loosely based on Little Walter Jacobs' "Juke." Cotton performs excellent covers of Muddy Waters' famous "Hoochie Coochie Man" and Otis Rush's big hit, "I Can't Quit You Baby." The highlight of this great set is the Paul Butterfield Blues Band hit "One More Mile," written by Cotton and featuring a dark elemental blues, which is a stark contrast to Cotton's well-known style. This is a great find for those that may have thrown out their Cotton LPs, and this newly restored CD is a nice treasure for blues fans. Paula Edelstein, All Music Guide
